Career advice: videography :i want to shoot, edit, and/or assist produce at a news station how do i get in?

So Im 28 with some college in music education but what i really want to do is video production. i want to do it as a business (music, weddings corporate) but i want a solid job with benefits and to do my business as a side thing. My brother works as a editor (and former sports anchor) and has been at it for 14 years he has a degree in broadcast journalism. I want to be behind the scenes (shooting editing producing) i have learned alot on my own in all three areas but i have no formal education or experience in it. my bro says camera men are always needed to shoot and edit footage but i need to know how to break in. whether there is some on th job training or what type of program to take at college (video production, b.c. journalism 2 or 4 years) i have no ambitions to be in front of the camera. so if anyon has an idea please let me know. also if you have any other ideas about how to get solid, non-freelance work in these areas. i dont want to get richjust make like 30-40k a year thanx

You need experience. Simple as that.

One thing they will want is a demo reel. An example of your skills - whether it be editing, shooting, producing, or just showing that you can direct a crew.

If you want schooling, Community Colleges usually offer some kind of mass communications work and *most* community colleges run by the state have some kind of public access channel or radio station you could volunteer for and garner real working experience. And, in two years you have a degree - and that is a very powerful thing, even for an Associates Degree.

If you want to do it without formal training, you'l lhave to teach yourself. That means reading every article, book, and pamphlet you can get your hands on. I'd say choose a specific field to start out with. You want to be a cameraman? Familiarize yourself with industry standard equipment - not only cameras but batteries, carrying cases, types of dollies, steady-cams and all that.
