Chance at Brown University?
You have a really good profile, and I'd say to definetly give it a shot. Applying ED raises your chances of getting in from something like 12% to 17%.
I don't know much about the PLME program except that it's really competitive.
I applied ED to Brown, and my SAT score was a little bit lower than yours (but I didn't take any subject tests and so I submitted my ACT, which they accept in place of the SAT and Subject tests)
If you know you want to come, apply ED. It's a lot less nerve racking to know where you're going a whole semester before everyone else, AND you can get a Brown hoodie to sport for Christmas. :)
I hope to see you on campus next year!
Reply:I'm not sure if you check your comments on your questions or if yahoo informs you, and both of us have IM and e-mail disabled, but, I added you as a contact. (Not sure what it does) but if you want more help with Brown things, just add me as well, and I'm more than willing to assist you. -cat Report It
Reply:You've got a good shot. I'd try to raise your writing and math schores though.
But I'm curious.... ANY SAT IIs?
Reply:old secret;
2 topics for you--
excluding military academies, it matters not
one bit if one starts classes at one's ideal
university as a frosh or a junior.
I have never ever heard of one college in the US to reject a jr that had applied for admission.
does that help you in any way?
In my BIASED opinion, all students should
stop taking college entrance tests and
not enter any university as a frosh or
as a lower division student--it is a pure waste!
[the college tests are part of American culture, not any law. They depict probabilities only.
I got the nation's lowest score and was on the
honor roll in 1 semeser!!!
Reply:It's a crap shoot, you and the thousand or so others applying for the couple hundred spots are mirror images. All I can suggest is don't put all your eggs in one basket. Why only Brown? Don't set yourself up for self-inflicted failure. Sometimes family pressure can make it tough. (Everyone on your father's side attended Brown for example). Realize that you're doing your best and if you don't get in at Brown, you will someplace else with equal prestige (Dartmouth or Cornell)...your record is too good not to.
Reply:Looks good to me, give it a shot. If thats where you want to go, then go for it. I say your grades and other activities are good enough, now it will be up to the admission committee. When applying to an ivy, understand they have a low acceptance rate. Just because you don't get accepted, it doesn't mean your grades aren't good enough. Other factors include sex and race (its not right i know, but unfortunately most schools want to keep a good diversity of student), international students, grants and scholarships all play a role.
GOOD LUCK.
Reply:As someone who went to Brown, I'd say you look like a lot of applicants there, so if it's your 1st choice, apply ED. They will defer you if they aren't sure about you--I doubt you'd get outright rejected. If you apply to PLME, sometimes you will get into Brown but not into PLME--PLME is extremely competitive, and very small, so if you were planning on that, don't get your heart set on it, and don't take it as any indicator that you aren't good enough...they reject the majority of people, and the majority of those rejected could have been successful.
Your SATs are on the lower end, but there are definitely students in that range who were accepted. Keep working on them.
Also, the quality of your high school matters...straight A's from a poor school aren't going to fly as well as a 3.6 from a top ranked school. Unfortunately, that's not something you can change. If you feel like your school might compromise you (i.e. you're one of the few kids in your school who goes to college or at least who is applying to good colleges) play that up in your application...that makes you special.
