My daughter is turning 15 soon and she really wants a macbook. She is very creative and graphic artist and magazine editor are in her top ten career choices. We are a PC family and I just want to know WHY I should get her a mac, it seems lke there is less to do on them? I don't want her to get bored and just go back to her other computer (PC)
Her older sister works for a c ollege newspaper and swears by macs, but are they worth the 2,000 bucks?
Macbook or PC laptop for a recreational use?
$2000 would buy you a heck of a Mac. The MacBooks (entry level) are $999 at the Apple website in the education store. It'll have iLife 08 which is iTunes, iChat, iMovie, iDvd, Safari, Garage Band, iCal and more. You'll need a better word processor than the one on the MacBook. You can buy Office (yep Microsoft sells a Mac version) or get Neo Office, or Open Office for free, or buy iWorks (which Apple just put out for $79) which will read %26amp; write in Word, Excel and Power Point formats. You might want to add a DVD burner, it comes with a cd writer/burner, dvd player. That'll add another $60 or so. So for around $1100 she'll have a MacBook that is wi-fi ready out of the box %26amp; has a built in webcam. What you won't have to buy her is anti-virus software. None of the 115,000 Windows viruses will affect a Mac. Instead of daily downloads of virus updates and scans which slow your computer down, she'll be able to use it. If you go up to a MacBook Pro (bigger screen, faster processors, etc.) that'll run you maybe $2000 with the additional software etc. But for a fifteen year old, a MacBook is good enough.
Reply:When PCs first started being introduced for the general consumer the Mac was the hands-down winner for publishing/graphics. That was 1987. Twenty years later the PC can do anything the Mac can do but the Mac still has a very strong foothold in the publishing industry.
Now that Macs can run Windows the line for choosing one or the other has become blurry. Personally I prefer PCs but given your daughter's activities and interests I'd say get the Macbook. I'm not sure what's required to run Windows on one though; if the ability to run Windows is included in the box or something bought later on.
Reply:Macs are worth every penny. I'm sure your well aware of how often you must do virus and spyware scans. Most of the time these programs give you protection, but they slow your computers performance. The mac has a far lesser chance of being attacked by spyware/viruses.
After you take the new mac out of the box it's ready to use. You don't even have to spend time uninstalling preloaded software.
Macs are the clear choice in the design field.
There are several mac programs such as IWEB %26amp; KEYNOTE that give you the ability to create beautiful designs within a few clicks.
For graphics there is a lot out there for a mac, including www.gimp.org which is a free graphics program that is comparable to Adobe Photoshop. There will also be times when she will need access to a PC to make some tasks easier. Lucky for her there are a few in the house, at least for now :)
Good luck
Chadwick
